FLASH ROM LOAD RISKS

The Modem chipset used in the em/Modem Module uses modem AT
commands to load the Flash ROM. If Modem Flash ROM Load is
interrupted and is unable to complete, the Flash ROM in the
modem that was being loaded will no longer be functional.
Without a functional Flash ROM, it will not be able to handle
the AT commands to load the Flash ROM and either the affected
chipset or the entire em/Modem module will have to be shipped
to Digi to have the Flash ROM restored.

When planning em/Modem Flash ROM Load, choose a time when the
system is relatively quiet and stable to minimize the possibility
that the system could go down during the load.

NOTE: When Flash ROM load completes, the modem will be set
to use Factory Default Option settings.

FLASH ROM LOAD CHOICES

This utility allows em/Modems to have their Flash ROM Loads in
in groups or individually. Choices are:

o Load all of the em/Modems on this system

o Load all of the em/Modems on this adapter

o Load all of the em/Modems on the module/concentrator

     o Load a specific em/Modem

FLASH ROM LOAD PROCEDURE

Insure that both the Flash ROM file to be loaded and the
Flash ROM loader are located in the directory
'/etc/digi/em_modem'. If the 'em_modem' subdirectory doesn't
exist, you will have to create it. There can be more than
one Flash ROM file in this directory but only one Flash ROM
loader. The Flash ROM loader must be named "flashrom.loader".
Flash ROM files must end with ".flrom", i.e.,
"rom.1.2.flrom", "flrom.flrom", etc.

The latest Flash ROM file and Flash ROM loader can be
downloaded from the Digi Bulletin Board, ftp site, or
home page. Refer to your Digi hardware/software manual
for information on how to access these sites.

NOTE that the "/etc/digi/em_modem" directory is removed and
its contents lost whenever the mpi package is removed.

This utility will present a list of all Flash ROM files
found in the directory, allowing the user to choose one for
the load process.

Once the Flash ROM file and em/Modems to be loaded have
been chosen, the load will proceed. If more than one em/Modem
is to be loaded, this utility will pause briefly between loads
to allow the user halt further loads. Once a load has begun,
the user will NOT be given the option of halting until it
completes. Loading of multiple em/Modems will proceed without
user intervention unless this utility finds a modem with the
the same or newer Flash ROM already loaded in the modem.
Then the user will be promted to decide whether to skip to the
next modem or load anyway.

WHY A FLASH ROM LOAD MIGHT FAIL

The Flash ROM loader will not load a modem if:

o The Flash ROM loader was not able to open to the modem port
     for exclusive use.

o The modem doesn't respond to AT commands

o The modem chipset doesn't match the selected Flash ROM file

FLASH ROM LOAD REPORT

Once all specified em/Modems have been loaded, this utility will
display an em/Modem load report showing which modems were
loaded and which were not loaded.
